Learn to Swim

Recreation Department offers a comprehensive Aquatic program including American Red Cross swim lessons for all ages. Each class is taught by certified and trained instructors and includes fun activities and lessons to help the participant learn how to swim and how to be safe in and around the water. Please call the pool office at 727-363-9264 to register for lessons.

The Complete Aquatic Work-Out (Norma)- 16 years and older
This class is designed for a complete work-out using the natural resistance of the water and aided by resistance bells.  The class offers stretching, toning, range of motion, balance, strength training, and aerobics, and oh yes, FUN!  It is designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike, and is conducted in both shallow and deeper water (noodles are used) for a total body experience.

Aqua Zumba- All Ages
Aqua Zumba allows you to get a great workout but also makes it fun. Just like the regular Zumba format, Aqua Zumba uses dance and fitness moves to the background of fun, up-beat music.

Aquatic Fitness Class- All Ages
Join us for fun and invigorating exercise session. Aquatic Fitness offers a great muscle toning and cardio workout with the benefits and support of the water.

Aquatic Yoga- Teens & Adults
Aqua yoga has all the benefits of land-based yoga such as stress reduction, better body awareness, and increased flexibility. Being in the water adds an increase in your range of motion, decompresses your spine, reduces the weight on your joints and is accessible to everyone. Come have fun and limber up your body and mind.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Classes
Become a certified lifeguard. Participants must be 15 years or older and must complete a pre-test in order to continue in the class. The pre-test consists of treading water for 2 minutes using legs only,  swimming 300 yards without stopping and swim 20 yards, surface dive and retrieve a 10 pound brick from bottom, resurface and swim back to the starting point and exit pool. Register in person at the the St. Pete Beach Pool.

Adult Swim Classes for ages 15 years plus…
Terrified of the water? Let us teach you how to swim. Classes consist of instruction in basic swimming, stroke techniques and personal safety skills. Class is set up to move with our own pace with no pressure to advance quickly. Lessons are 30 minutes each. To register visit or call the pool office 727-363-9264.

  Fee: $25  Residents/ $30 Non Residents per session 

St. Pete Beach Masters
Maintain a healthy physical condition and positive mental well-being, enhance and revitalize fitness regimens or train for a special event. New members are accepted throughout the year. The team invites all swimmers to attend a practice and learn more about St. Pete Beach Masters. 
   Date:  Mon & Thu: 5-7am
   Fee:  $40 month or $5 drop in

West Coast Aquatic Swim Team (ages 5 or older):
Florida West Coast Aquatic Swim Team is an age-divided, competitive, year-round swim team that practices daily and competes in local, state and national USS sanctioned meets. Private Swim Lessons (Year Round)
Our trained and certified instructors with work together with you to create a plan and move your towards your goals with one-on-one training. Classes are 30 minutes per lesson.
  Fee: $25 Residents/ $30 Non Residents per session

Every Child A Swimmer Program 2017 (Grade K-5)
Gulf Beaches Kiwanis’ water safety and beginner’s swimming classes for non swimmers. This program is co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches and the City of St Pete Beach.  David Romine is the Kiwanis Every Child A Swimmer Chair.  He has full discretion as to who is selected for this program and any discipline problems that may arise.  A paid Certified Water Safety Instructor and a Certified Lifeguard are furnished.  The instructors are volunteers from Gulf Beaches Kiwanis Club and employees from the City of St. Pete Beach.
Date:  May 1 – May 16 on Tuesdays & Thursday
Time: 6:00pm & 6:30pm
Registration: Friday, April 28 from 6-7pm
   A parent or guardian must be present for paperwork and instructions. Each child will be water tested at that time and should wear a bathing suit.

Parent & Child Lessons(Ages 6 Months to 3 years old)
Emphasizes water adjustment, parenting skills and water safety. Special attention is given to the varying development stages of this age group. Goals for this class include the child’s enjoyment and adjustment in and around the water while instructing parents how to assist in the development of their children’s future swimming skills.
All classes are held for two weeks with 30-minute classes each Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday
  Fee: $40.00 Resident/$45.00 Non Resident

Learn to Swim- Swim Lessons
St. Pete Beach Recreation Department offers a complete learn to swim program to meet the needs of the entire community. Classes are offered for all ages from infants to seniors. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. All classes are held for two weeks with (8) 30 minutes sessions held Monday-Thursday.
  Fee: $40.00 Resident/$45.00 Non Resident 
Session I: April 17- 27 /  Session II: May 1-11 / Session III: May 15- 25
  Times: Level 1 & 2 5:00-5:30p & 5:35-6:05p
Session IV: May 30- June 8 / Session V:  June 12- 22 / Session VI: June 26- July 6 / Session VII: July 10- 20 / Session VIII: July 24- Aug 3

Times: Levels 1, 2, 3 @ 9:00 – 9:30 am, 5:00 – 5:30 pm, 5:35 – 6:05 pm

            Level 4 @ 5:00 – 5:30 pm, 5:35 – 6:05 pm
            Parent/Child @ 6:10 – 6:40 pm


Class Level Descriptions

Level 1, 2, 3, 4: (ages 3 and older)
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills       Purpose: Help students feel comfortable in the water
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills       Purpose: Give students success with fundamental skills
Level 3: Stroke Development                     Purpose: Build from skills in Level 2 with add’l  guided practice
Level 4: Stroke Improvement                   Purpose: Develop confidence in strokes and improve other skills

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Purpose: Help students feel comfortable in the water.
  -Basic water safety rules
  -Using a life jacket  
  -Submerging mouth, nose and eyes
  -Opening eyes underwater and picking up submerged objects         
  -Exhaling underwater
  -Swimming on-front and back using arm and leg actions      
  -Floating on front and back
 -Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Purpose: Give students success with fundamental skills
  -Moving in the water while wearing a life jacket      
  -Submerging entire head      
  -Front and back glide
  -Treading water using arm and leg motions      
  -Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help
  -Bobbing in water       
  -Jellyfish float       
  -Swimming using combined stroke on front and back

Level 3: Stroke Development
Purpose: Build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.
  -Reach assist       
  -Submerging and retrieving an object       
  -Front and back glide
  -Front and back crawl       
  -Kneeling or standing dive      
  -Rotary breathing in horizontal position
  -Survival float, back float         
  -Butterfly-kick and body motion

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Purpose: Develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills
  -Safe diving rules       
  -Dive from stride position or shallow dive      
  -Survival float, back float
  -Elementary backstroke, breaststroke, Butterfly      
   -Throwing assist       
  -Feet-first surface dive
  -Front and back crawl
